Semicon: small in size, big in significance
Semicon is short for semiconductors, also known as microchips. Microchips are tiny components that enable devices to function. They help devices to process information, take measurements and communicate with one another. You’ll find them, for example, in your mobile phone, smart thermostat, washing machine and smartwatch. New technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI), also cannot function without microchips.

Brainport, a global player in the semiconductor industry
The Brainport region is one of the world’s leading high-tech regions. Hundreds of companies, such as ASML, Thermo Fisher, NXP and Prodrive Technologies, work together here to facilitate the development and production of microchips. The region’s strength lies not only in the semiconductor companies themselves, but precisely in the collaboration across the entire production chain.
For example, mechanical engineering firms develop lithography machines used to manufacture chips. Metalworking companies play an indispensable role in this process. They produce the highly precise components required for these high-tech machines. Other companies, meanwhile, focus on chip design and develop smart semiconductors for applications in, for example, smartphones, cars, AI and medical technology. Chips are then manufactured, tested and prepared for use in modern cleanrooms. Software and ICT also play a major role. Examples include software for designing chips, controlling machines and analysing data in production processes. Cybersecurity and artificial intelligence are also becoming increasingly important in the sector.
People are the key to success
Because behind all the work there are people. From metalworkers, cleanroom staff and fitters to software developers, engineers and data specialists. Together, they work every day on technology that shapes our daily lives. Tens of thousands of people are already working in this sector, which is a key driver of employment, economic growth and innovation in the Brainport region.
