Quality assistant in the semiconductor industry

Working as a quality control officer

As a quality control officer, you check whether components and products meet all the requirements. In the semiconductor industry, this is particularly important, as components often need to be manufactured with great precision and must function correctly. For example, you check the dimensions, materials and finish of a component. You also record your findings and flag up any issues.

What does a quality assurance officer do?

As a quality assurance officer, you ensure that products meet the agreed quality standards. You work with precision, using measuring equipment, drawings and clear work instructions. Your duties may include, for example:

  • Measuring and inspecting components.
  • Reading technical drawings and work instructions.
  • Checking whether products meet the requirements.
  • Identifying and recording deviations.
  • Recording measurement results.
  • Discussing improvements with colleagues.

You’ll often work alongside people from production, assembly and engineering.

Is quality assurance work right for you?

For this role, it is important that you are precise and have a keen eye for detail. You find it interesting to investigate whether something is correct and why something might not be right. Do you enjoy working with great precision? Do you quickly spot deviations? Then a role in quality assurance could be a good fit for you.

Can you start as a quality assurance officer?

Some quality roles require technical experience – for example, experience in production, assembly, metalworking or engineering. Do you already have experience with measurements, technical drawings or quality checks? If so, that could provide a good foundation.

For other roles, you can start with less experience and learn on the job. Through a course or training programme, you can, for example, learn how to use measuring equipment, read technical drawings and understand quality requirements.

Career progression in quality

As you gain more experience, you’ll be able to carry out increasingly complex checks and take on more responsibility. For example, you could progress to become a senior quality assurance officer, quality inspector, measurement technician, quality engineer or quality coordinator. You can also specialise further in measurement technology, processes or quality improvement. There are various opportunities for further career growth.
