Software Engineer in the semiconductor industry
Working as a software engineer
As a software engineer, you develop software for machines, systems and processes in the semiconductor industry. This software ensures, for example, that a machine does exactly what is required, that data is processed correctly and that processes can run automatically. So you do not work directly on a chip, but on the technology needed to design, manufacture, test or inspect chips and components.
What does a software engineer do?
As a software engineer, you devise, build and test software. You work out what a system needs to be able to do and translate that into a working solution. Your tasks may include, for example:
- Designing and programming software.
- Improving existing software.
- Identifying and resolving software errors.
- Testing software.
- Processing and analysing data.
- Collaborating with engineers from other disciplines.
- Ensuring that software operates reliably and securely.
You’ll often work alongside colleagues from fields such as mechatronics, electrical engineering and mechanical engineering.
Is software engineering right for you?
For this role, it’s important that you can think logically and enjoy solving problems. You enjoy working with computers, technology and finding new solutions. Do you enjoy solving problems? Do you love technology? Then software engineering could be a good fit for you.
Can you start as a software engineer?
For most software engineer roles, you’ll need a technical qualification, for example in computer science, software engineering, ICT or a similar field. Do you already have programming experience in another sector? If so, your knowledge could be a good fit for the semiconductor industry. You’ll then learn more about the machines, systems and high quality standards within this industry. The programming languages and techniques you’ll need vary depending on the role and employer.
Career progression as a software engineer
As you gain more experience, you’ll be able to work on increasingly complex systems and projects. You can specialise further in a particular area of software or take on greater responsibility. For example, you could progress to become a senior software engineer, software architect, technical lead, systems engineer or specialist in embedded software. You could also move into a role where you manage a team or make technical decisions for larger projects.
