Working in a cleanroom

Working in a cleanroom

In the semiconductor industry, components and machines are manufactured where even a tiny speck of dust can cause problems. That is why some of the work takes place in a cleanroom: a very clean working environment in which the amount of dust and other small particles is kept as low as possible. When you work in a cleanroom, you wear special clothing, such as overalls, gloves, a hairnet and sometimes a face mask. You follow set procedures to ensure you work cleanly and safely.

What do you do in a cleanroom?

That depends on your role. For example, you might assemble, inspect, clean, package or test components. You often work with great precision and follow clear work instructions. There are various roles in a cleanroom, such as:

  • Cleanroom assistant You clean components, inspect them and ensure they are ready for the next stage.
  • Assembly worker You carefully assemble small or larger components.
  • Cleanroom technician You assemble technical components or complete modules.
  • Operator You operate machines and monitor the production process.
  • Quality control assistant You check whether components meet all requirements.
  • Logistics assistant You ensure that the correct materials and components are delivered to the right place.

Which role suits you best depends on your experience, interests and technical knowledge.

Can you start without any experience?

For various roles, you can join the industry even if you haven’t worked in the semiconductor sector before. Examples include roles such as cleanroom assistant, assembly worker, operator or logistics assistant. Employers don’t just look at qualifications. The ability to work accurately, take responsibility and a willingness to learn new things are also important. For some roles, however, technical experience or a technical qualification is required. Sometimes, a short training course or programme can provide you with the knowledge and skills you need for a role.

Career progression in the cleanroom

A role in the cleanroom can also be the start of the next step in your career. As you gain more experience or undertake further training, you can develop your career further. For example, you could progress to become a senior staff member, a technician, a technical specialist, a quality assurance officer or a team leader. There are therefore various possible career paths. You can specialise further in engineering, take on more responsibility for quality or processes, or progress to a role in which you supervise colleagues.
